Hematopoietic Tissue Biorepository - (HTB)

Overview of Services

The Hematopoietic Tissue Biorepository (HTB) is a shared resource core within the Beckman Research Institute at City of Hope. The HTB was established to help further our understanding of all aspects of normal and aberrant hematopoiesis, and our primary goal is to support high quality, translational, clinical research on hematological diseases and malignancies by providing biological specimens of interest to investigators at City of Hope and other affiliated research institutions.

Our Mission and Vision

Part of City of Hope’s mission is to transform the future of healthcare through innovative research and by turning science into practical benefit. The mission of the HTB is to provide blood and bone marrow derived cellular products, buccal cell specimens for germline nucleic acids, normal skin cells, and all associated medical information for the purpose of conducting research and supporting the mission of City of Hope. We streamline and standardize access to research samples from both common and rare diseases, which might otherwise take years to collect for individual research projects, allowing researchers to maximize the effective use of precious time and research samples to develop novel therapies, diagnostics, and the cures of the future. Our vision is to collect and bank a comprehensive panel of tissue from newly diagnosed or newly relapsed participants over the full spectrum of hematological diseases seen at City of Hope.

Services We Offer

We consent willing participants, procure, process, store, and distribute samples, and maintain all collected specimens and clinical data in our secure database. To date we have banked specimens in acute and chronic leukemia, myelodysplastic syndrome, myeloproliferative neoplasms, multiple myeloma, lymphomas, anemias, and many more. We can provide and distribute these samples to investigators at City of Hope and other collaborating institutions who have obtained protocol approval from the HTB’s  committee and City of Hope’s Institutional Review Board. We can also prospectively collect specimens to fulfill your research needs. If interested, please contact us to discuss your proposal.

We also provide various processing services such as bone marrow and peripheral blood mononuclear cell separations, nucleic acid extractions, and leukocyte processing. We can obtain immunophenotypically characterized monoclonal cell subpopulations and have the ability to store skin biopsy and buccal cell samples.

Why is Translational Research so Important?

Translational research marries the bench and the bed side, allowing for innovative research to be applied directly to patient treatment. This unique collaboration permits the exploration of new therapies against disease and even for the development of personalized therapy. It can also lead to biomarker discovery for diagnostics, prognostics, and drug sensitivity.

Research is continually being performed at City of Hope to fulfill the mission of caring for our patents. However, in order to spearhead the development of new therapies, research must be done to understand diseases originating in the hematopoietic system and the effectiveness of established treatments. This ongoing research includes understanding how blood is formed, how and why blood diseases occur, and how to predict whether disease is likely to occur. Through translational research, investigators at City of Hope anticipate finding ways to predict, detect, prevent, and cure diseases of the blood, including cancers and disorders that disrupt the formation of normal blood cells.
