Comprehensive Metabolic Phenotyping (CMP)

Overview of Services

The Comprehensive Metabolic Phenotyping (CMP) Core provides sophisticated metabolic testing in mouse models on a fee-for-service basis. The CMP Core is comprised of expert staff and state-of-the-art equipment to perform a cadre of metabolic tests for both internal and external investigators in both academia and industry.  Among the Core equipment are an EchoMRI for body composition analysis; a Sable Systems Promethion metabolic caging platform for assessing food and water consumption, locomotor activity, and energy expenditure; a rodent treadmill for forced exercise studies; running wheels in the Promethion system for voluntary exercise studies; a Starr Life Sciences mouse telemetry system incorporated into the Promethion; temperature-controlled cabinets for the Promethion system to conduct ciradian rhythm or adaptive thermogenesis experiments; two Seahorse systems for metabolic experiments in cells and tissues; and an Oroboros instrument for high-resolution respirometry.

The Core provides a series of in vivo metabolic tests, including glucose, insulin, and pyruvate tolerance test, hyperinsulinemic-euglycemic clamps to assess insulin action, hyperglycemic clamps for measuring insulin secretion, and hypoglycemic clamps for assessing gluco-counterregulation.  The core also can perform arterial and venous catheterizations and hepatocyte isolations.  For downstream assays the Core uses a SpectraMax 5 multi-function plate reader and AquaMax from Molecular Devices, Perkin Elmer gamma and liquid scintillation counters, and Bullet Blender Gold for tissue homogenization.  The CMP Core was established in 2016 with Dr. Patrick Fueger as its founding Director.  New services can be offered by the Core at the request of investigators.
